Scientists Just Gene-Edited Two Beagles to Be Truly Hypoallergenic — Here's What It Means for Dog Lovers With Allergies

A New York biotech just unveiled two beagles CRISPR-edited to lack Can f 1, the protein behind most dog allergies. Here's what the peer-reviewed data actually shows, why "hypoallergenic" breeds were never the answer, and what allergic dog lovers can do today.

If you have ever stood in someone's living room with watery eyes, sneezing into your sleeve while the friendliest dog in the world leaned against your knee, this week's news probably stopped your scroll. On Wednesday, August 5, a New York biotech company called Kindred Companion Sciences came out of stealth mode with two beagles named Alfie and Bailey — and a peer-reviewed paper claiming the dogs simply do not produce the protein that makes most people allergic to dogs.

Not "low-shedding." Not "hypoallergenic" in the marketing sense. Gene-edited so the allergen isn't there at all.

The story hit the AP wire, WIRED, and New Scientist within hours, and searches for "hypoallergenic dog" spiked right along with it. So let's do what wire copy usually doesn't: separate what was actually proven from what's still years away, and talk about what allergic dog lovers can realistically do this week.

What scientists actually did

The study, titled "Targeted Genetic Knockout of Can f 1, the Major Allergen in Dogs," was published in The CRISPR Journal on August 5, 2026.

Kindred's team, led by geneticist Matt Walker — who has been allergic to dogs his whole life — started with skin cells (fibroblasts) from a female beagle. Using CRISPR-Cas9, they inserted a single extra DNA base into exon 1 of the Can f 1 gene. That one-letter insertion causes a frameshift: the cell's instructions for building the protein become, in Walker's framing, gibberish. No functional protein gets made.

The edited cells were then used as nuclear donors in somatic cell nuclear transfer — the same cloning technique behind Dolly the sheep. The team created 25 embryos and transferred them to a surrogate beagle. Two implanted and developed to term, producing genetically identical twin females in September 2024. They are approaching their second birthday.

The results reported in the paper:

  • No detectable Can f 1 in saliva or hair/dander samples from either dog, by Western blot. Poodle and goldendoodle control samples showed high levels.
  • No off-target edits detected across analyzed sites by whole-genome sequencing.
  • Normal growth and development on veterinary examination for both dogs, with normal birth weights and no congenital abnormalities.
  • Skin prick testing in a dog-allergic person produced visible reactions to unedited beagle, poodle, and goldendoodle extracts — and no detectable reaction to extracts from Alfie or Bailey.

Bailey now lives with Walker in New York; Alfie lives in Florida with another Kindred scientist. "The feeling right now is sort of a mix of relief and awe and gratitude that it worked," Walker told the Associated Press.

Why Can f 1 is the target

Dogs make at least six known allergenic proteins, labeled Can f 1 through Can f 6. Can f 1 is a small lipocalin protein secreted from tongue tissue into saliva and from sebaceous glands into the skin — which is why it ends up in fur, dander, and every surface your dog leans on.

It is also the heavyweight. Published allergy practice parameters put the share of dog-allergic people who make Can f 1-specific IgE antibodies at roughly 52% — more than half. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology notes that about 10% of Americans show allergic sensitization to dogs.

That's the promise. It is also the honest limit. "The switched-off gene is the main, but not the sole, allergy-causing culprit," said Dr. Jeff SoRelle, a pathologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center who was not involved in the study, adding that "we don't exactly know just how effective or broadly useful this could be for stopping dog allergy in humans." If your reactions are driven by Can f 3 (serum albumin) or Can f 5 (a male-specific prostate allergen), removing Can f 1 may not be enough.

The part that should genuinely change how you shop for a dog

Here's the finding buried in the coverage that matters most to the average dog owner: the poodle and goldendoodle control samples produced clear allergic reactions.

That isn't a surprise to allergists. It confirms a decade of research that the "hypoallergenic breed" label has been quietly failing for years:

  • A 2012 study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology measured Can f 1 in hair, coat, and home dust across so-called hypoallergenic breeds (Labradoodle, Poodle, Spanish Water Dog, Airedale Terrier) versus Labradors and controls. The hypoallergenic group had significantly higher Can f 1 in hair and coat samples. Its conclusion: "There is no evidence for the classification of certain dog breeds as being hypoallergenic."
  • A separate home-dust study found no classification scheme in which homes with "hypoallergenic" dogs had lower dog allergen than other homes.
  • The AAAAI states it plainly: no dog is allergen-free, and shedding less does not mean producing fewer allergenic proteins.

Walker's own experience matches the data — he reacts just as much to his parents' goldendoodle as to any other dog. If you've paid a premium for a doodle specifically to manage allergies and it didn't work, the science says that wasn't bad luck. It was a marketing claim that never had evidence behind it.

Don't line up yet: the ethical and practical caveats

Kindred dogs are not for sale. The company states the genomic alteration is investigational and has not been approved by the FDA. Commercializing it affordably is an open problem, and long-term health monitoring of Alfie and Bailey is ongoing — cloning-based approaches to hypoallergenic pets have historically produced less healthy animals because of excessive genetic similarity.

There is a rescue-shaped worry too. "It opens the door to a lot more people being able to own pets," NYU Grossman School of Medicine bioethicist Arthur Caplan told the AP. "On the negative side, it may discourage people from trying to use strays and unwanted animals that are not engineered to be allergy-free." The British Veterinary Association's policy position on gene editing takes a similar line: promising, but animal health and welfare have to stay front and center, and each application needs its own ethical justification.

This is a place where reasonable people land differently, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. A technology that lets an allergic family adopt at all is a real good. So is a shelter dog who gets a home. Both can be true.

What allergic dog lovers can actually do right now

Alfie and Bailey are a proof of concept, not a product. Here is what the evidence supports today.

Get tested before you get a dog

An allergist can run skin or blood testing for IgE to specific dog proteins. Knowing whether you react to Can f 1, Can f 5, or several allergens changes your odds and your plan. Component testing is the difference between guessing and knowing.

Ask about immunotherapy

Allergen immunotherapy — shots or sublingual drops — is the only approach that modifies the underlying immune response rather than masking symptoms. It takes months to years, so start the conversation before you bring a dog home, not after.

Control the environment, with realistic expectations

  • Keep the dog out of the bedroom. This is the single most consistent recommendation in allergy practice parameters, because bedding and carpet are the biggest allergen reservoirs.
  • Use filtration rated MERV 10 or higher for dander; HEPA room units plus mattress and pillow covers reliably lower airborne allergen. Be aware the clinical trials are mixed on whether symptoms improve as much as the air readings do.
  • Remove carpet where you can, or vacuum frequently with a sealed HEPA machine.
  • Bathe your dog regularly, but treat it as one small lever — allergen rebounds within days.
  • Wash hands and change clothes after long snuggles. Can f 1 particles are small, airborne, and cling to fabric.

Do a real-world trial with the actual dog

Because within-breed variation dwarfs between-breed differences, the only meaningful test is spending extended time with the specific individual dog you're considering. Many shelters and rescues will support a foster-to-adopt trial. Ask.

The bottom line

Two healthy beagles in New York and Florida just demonstrated that the biggest dog allergen can be removed at its genetic source without visible harm to the dogs. That's a genuine first, and it is worth being excited about.

It is also two dogs, one skin-prick subject, no FDA approval, and years of monitoring ahead. In the meantime, the most useful thing this study did for most dog lovers is expose the doodle-shaped myth: if you're allergic, the answer was never a breed label. It's an allergist, an honest environmental plan, and time spent with the individual dog.
